There are a number of ways that a chauffeur can be employed as this depends on the type of work they want to do and they type of people they are working for. However, the US taxation authority has found that they are missing out on a lot of payroll tax because of the chauffeurs who are working as independent contractors.

Working as an independent contractor is a great way for a chauffeur to get work because the limo hire companies don’t have to worry about paying any of the normal employer expenses. However, the IRS have found that there have been incorrect classifications of workers as independent contractors and all levels of government are missing out on their payroll taxes, Social Security and worker’s compensation payments.

US governments have also found that the chauffeurs and taxi drivers classifying themselves as independent contractors, and therefore as being self employed, are actually robbing themselves of their employee rights such as union protection and other benefits.

While independent contractors have long been operating in the limo hire industry, the taxi industry has begun to use this process too, by operating taxi companies as leasing companies and leasing their vehicles to the taxi drivers. However, these arrangements are not regulated by any of the tax systems.

While the tax and employee benefits do not directly affect the passengers of the limousines and taxis, when hiring a limousine, you must make sure that regardless of whether the chauffeur is an independent contractor or an employee, that there is sufficient insurance on the limousine in case of an accident and that whoever is running the limousine has the correct licensing.
